Women's Track & Field Alumna Campbell Named South Carolina Athlete of the Year

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Former Coastal Carolina University track and field All-American and current volunteer assistant coach Amber Campbell was named the Lucille Godbold Female Athlete of the Year by the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame, announced May 24 during the organization’s annual induction gala in Columbia, S.C.

Campbell, a 2008 Olympian as well as the 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 U.S. National Indoor champion in the weight throw continues to maintain a stellar professional career. The five-time All-American finished as the top U.S. hammer thrower in the 2008 Olympics and finished the 2010 indoor season winner of the Verizon Challenge as the highest scoring top indoor track and field athlete. At the 2008 Olympic trials, Campbell finished with the silver medal to qualify her for her first-ever Olympic Games in Beijing, China, where she was the top American finisher. In 2009, Campbell was the finalist in the World Track and Field Championships in Berlin, Germany.

At Coastal, Campbell, a five-time NCAA All-American and 16-time Big South champion, holds the Coastal Carolina school records in the weight throw, indoor shot put, outdoor shot put, discus and the hammer throw. She graduated as the All-Time American Collegiate record holder in the weight throw and the Co-American Collegiate record holders in the hammer throw.

Campbell joined several other Palmetto State stars receiving special awards during the S.C. Athletic Hall of Fame ceremonies including Clemson star tailback C.J. Spiller (Male Amateur Athlete of the Year), current U.S. Open golf champion and former Clemson star, Lucas Glover (Male Professional Athlete of the Year) and recent Appalachian State Quarterback Armanti Edwards (Greenwood, S.C. Native) who received the “Bobby Richardson” Sportsmanship Award.
