2011 East Preliminary Round Meet Central
CONWAY – Three Coastal Carolina women’s track and field individuals and a relay team have qualified for the East Preliminary Round of the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The NCAA East Preliminary Round is hosted by Indiana University at the Hoosiers’ Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex from May 26-28.
Earning individual bids to the East Preliminary Round by placing in the top 48 of their respective events in the east region are Deborah Mattern (javelin), Kierra Gabe (high jump) and Erica Peake (200-meters). The Chanticleers 400-meter relay team of Ashley Davis, Darriale Henley, Peake and Melekia Simpson also qualified for the preliminary round by recording a top 24 time in the east region.
Mattern will be making her third consecutive appearance at the East Preliminary Round as she earned the 23 seed in the javelin. Mattern’s qualifying distance of 46.03m (151-00) is both a Coastal Carolina and Big South Conference record. Earlier this season the senior became the first woman in Big South history to win three conference javelin championships. Last season, Mattern placed 18th in the preliminary round with a final distance of 43.01m (141-1).
Gabe, a native of Adams Run, N.C., earned the 35 seed in the high jump with a Coastal Carolina record height of 1.75m (5-8.75). Gabe set the school record at the Penn Relays on April 28. The junior nearly equaled her record-setting performance at the North Florida Invitational on May 14 as she cleared 1.74m (5-8.50).
Peake will compete in both the 200-meters and as a member of the 4x100-meter relay team at the preliminary round. The sophomore is seeded 48 in the 200-meters after finishing with her season-best time of 23.89 at the North Florida Invitational. This season, Peake earned three all-conference honors at the Big South Championship meet.
Coastal Carolina’s Big South champion 4x100-meter relay foursome of Davis, Henley, Peake and Simpson will line up as the 12 seed at the preliminary round. The quartet qualified for the championships on the final day of the season with a school record breaking time of 44.83 at the North Florida Invitational. London Smalls will also travel with the team as an alternate.
The top 12 athletes in each event will advance to the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa June 8-11.
