CHARLOTTE, N.C. – For the second time in three weeks Coastal Carolina’s Deborah Mattern has been named the Big South Conference Women’s Field Athlete of the Week, as announced Thursday by the Conference office.
Mattern, a senior, threw a personal and Coastal Carolina season best distance of 145-01 (44.23) in the javelin at the Tiger Track Classic hosted by Auburn University, good for fifth in the 23-competitor field with the mark. Her toss currently ranks 50th in the NCAA this season.
Also garnering awards from the Big South were Charleston Southern’s Javon Young who was named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week, while Winthrop senior Sasha Robinson earned the Big South Women’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week honor. In addition, Liberty redshirt-junior Kolby Shepherd was named the Big South Men’s Field Athlete of the Week.
Mattern and the Chanticleer throwers will be competing at the Seminole Invitational this weekend (April 8-9) while the distance and middle distance runners take part in the Duke Invitational.
