CONWAY – The Coastal Carolina men’s and women’s track & field teams will make the journey to the University of South Carolina on Friday and Saturday (March 25-26) to compete in the annual Weems Baskin Invitational held at the Gamecock’s Weems Baskin Track Facility.

The meet will feature 26 women’s teams and 24 men’s teams competing in the two day event.  South Carolina will field the highest rated teams in the field according to the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s preseason poll as the Gamecock’s men’s team is 20th overall and the women’s team is 42nd.  On the women’s side the Chanticleers will see a familiar foe as Big South rival Charleston Southern is scheduled to compete.

The Chanticleers women’s team enters the meet having seven student-athletes ranked in the top 20 of the NCAA East Region in their respective events.  Topping the list are Emily Marchini and Jamie Brusa who rank sixth and seventh in the 10,000 meters.  Deborah Mattern, who was named the Big South Women’s Field Athlete of the Week for her efforts at the CCU/Shamrock Invitational, sits 17th in the East Region in the javelin.  Mattern’s season best mark of 142’02” (43.33m) would have been enough to qualify for the NCAA Championships last season.

After three competitions this season, the men’s team has a total of nine members ranked in the top 20 of the NCAA East Region and five in the top 25 in the NCAA.  Coastal Carolina and Big South recorder holder in the high jump, Jacques Watson, is the Chants highest ranked performer (fourth in the East and 14th overall) with a cleared height of 6’9.75” (2.08m).  Also in the top ten in the East Region in their respective events are Kyle Kling (eighth in the 5,000m), Charlie Tidwell (eighth in the hammer) and Jason Flanagan (ninth in the javelin).

Kling will be the lone Chanticleer ranked in the NCAA East top 25 not to compete in the Weems Baskin Invitational as he will compete in the 10,000 meters at the Raleigh Relays on Friday night.  The field of 37 competitors will include Sam Chelanga of Liberty, the NCAA 10,000 meter record holder.
