Mattern Tabbed Big South Women's Field Athlete of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C.– Coastal Carolina’s Deborah Mattern has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotel’s Women’s Field Athlete of the Week. Winthrop’s Keary Simms has been named the Men’s Track Athlete of the Week, while Natalie Pearson of UNC Asheville earned the Big South Women’s Track Athlete of the Week honors. Meanwhile, Gardner-Webb’s Christoph Hutschalik was tabbed the Men’s Field Athlete of the Week, the League announced today.

Mattern, a senior from Turnbridge, Vt., turned in a throw of 142’ 2” (43.33m) in the javelin at the Shamrock Invitational over the weekend. She finished second overall in the event as her throw set the 2011 Big South Conference standard in the event. Additionally, Mattern’s throw ranks 17th in the NCAA East Region and 35th overall in the NCAA this season.

Mattern and the Chanticleers will travel to South Carolina to compete in the Weems Baskin Invitational on Friday and Saturday, March 25-26.
