CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University women’s indoor track and field team heads to Clemson for the Tiger Paw Invitational Friday, Feb. 11 through Saturday, Feb. 12. It is the second of five meets the Chanticleers will run in Tiger territory, including the Big South Indoor Championship Feb. 24-25. This is the fourth year the Chanticleers are participating in the Tiger Paw Invitational.
The meet is scheduled to begin on Friday at 2 p.m. with the last women’s event scheduled to run at 8:55 p.m. The meet will resume on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with the final women’s even slated to begin at 4:45 p.m.
Coastal Carolina is sending 31 athletes to compete in 16 events at the Tiger Paw Invitational. It is a large meet with more than 1200 athletes competing.
The Chanticleers are coming off 17 top 10 finishes at the Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup, hosted by Penn State. In six events, Coastal captured first place ranking in the Big South.
This week, Kierra Gabe and Erica Peake swept the Big South indoor track and field weekly honors. It is the second straight week Peake earned Big South Indoor Track Athlete of the Week this season. Gabe was named Big South Indoor Field Athlete of the Week.
Last year, eight returning Chanticleers finished in the top 10 in nine different events. Sierrah Oates, Vondeeshia Humphries and Gabe all finished with two top ten finishes at the Tiger Paw Invitational. Oates finished 10th in the 60-meter hurdles and tied for fifth in the long jump. Humphries finished fourth in the 300 meters and ninth in the 400 meters. Gabe placed fifth overall in the high jump and finished ninth in the triple jump.
The Chanticleers are up in the ranks for the Big South with five individuals and two relay teams ranked first in the league. Leading the Big South in the 200 meters is Peake while Oates and Gabe rank first in the long jump and high jump. Santresa Jamison is first in the 400 meters and Shantelle Patterson leads the weight throw. The Chants 4x400 meter relay team, consisting of Jamison, Peake, Humphries and Samantha Simile, rank first in the conference along with the distance medley team, made up of Janel Reeves, Estefania Ramirez, Jessica Dennison and Shelby Nicosia.
