CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women’s indoor track and field team is set to open the 2011 season at the Virginia Tech Invitational Jan. 14-15 in Blacksburg, Va. with a partial squad of 20 athletes.

The meet will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday with the last event scheduled to start at 8:10.  The meet will resume on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the final women’s event slated to begin at 3:55 p.m.  Live results can be found here.

At last year’s Virginia Tech Invitational, the Chanticleers saw seven top-10 finishes, including Jessica Dennison, Darriale Henley, Mary Lawrence and Santresa Jamison and Vondeeshia Humphries, who return from the 4x400-meter relay team.

The Chanticleers look to capture their fifth Big South Indoor Championship in six years after finishing a close second to Liberty in 2010.  Coastal returns three conference indoor champions from a year ago in Melissa Arango (60-meter hurdles), Kierra Gabe (high jump) and Henley (long jump).

Also returning are eight All-Big South honorees, led by Henley, Gabe, Arango, Shantelle Patterson, Kandisa Allicock, Sierrah Oates and Santresa Jamison.  The Chants will welcome 10 newcomers to the roster this season.

“I am excited to start the season,” Head Coach Alan Connie said.  “We’ve added a good recruiting class and have improved our depth.  We are ready to get started.”
