Track Standout Marchini Places 18th at USA Junior Championships

EUGENE, Ore. – Coastal Carolina’s Emily Marchini represented the Chanticleers in the 5,000 meter run of the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships held at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field.

Marchini, Coastal’s lone representative at the event, placed 18 in the 23 competitor field with a time of 18:03.67. The freshman finished ahead of three unattached runners along with Brooke Dovell of Miami and Aubree Piepmeier of Vassar College. Kayla Beattie, an unattached runner, won the event in 16:29.92 followed by Taylor Crosson of Virginia Tech (16:57.92).

Marchini qualified for the junior championships with a time of 17:38.58 at the Duke Twilight on May 5. Marchini’s qualifying time was nearly a full 12 seconds under the standard of 17:50.14.

The junior championships, which features top athletes under the age of 20, serves as the basis to select America's team for the 2011 Pan American Games, which will be held Oct. 13-20 in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Marchini’s efforts officially wrap up the 2010-11 athletic season for the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.
