BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Coastal Carolina women’s 4x100-meter relay team and Erica Peake turned in strong performance at the NCAA East Preliminary Round on Saturday evening.
The Chanticleer foursome of Ashley Davis, Darriale Henley, Erica Peake and Melekia Simpson placed 15th of the 24 teams that qualified for the meet. The quartet turned in an impressive time of 45.10 to place sixth in third heat of the day. The team narrowly missed qualifying for the NCAA Championship meet by .31 second. The Chants time was its second fastest of the year, trailing only the school record performance of 44.83 at the North Florida Invitational.
Peake also competed in the quarterfinal of the 200-meters after placing third in the sixth heat of Friday’s preliminary trials. The sophomore placed 18th in the 24-competitor field, while besting athletes from traditional track and field powers Indiana, Louisiana State, Connecticut and South Carolina. Peake’s time of 24.07 was the second best performance by a Chanticleer in the 200-meters this season.
The Chants have now capped a successful 2011 campaign highlighted by the programs sixth Big South Championship since 2004 and the qualification of seven athletes to the NCAA East Preliminary Round.
