JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Coastal Carolina women's track & field team turned in a plethora of stellar performances on the final day of the regular season at the North Florida Invitational in Jacksonville, Fla.
Highlighting the day was the school record setting performance of Ashley Davis, Darriale Henley, Erica Peake and Melekia Simpson in the 4x100 meter relay. The quartet turned in a time of 44.83 to shatter the previous Chanticleer record of 45.28. The time will easily qualify the team for the NCAA first round in Bloomington, Ind.
In the finals of the 100 meter dash, Henley placed fourth with a time of 11.63. Gabrielle Lee followed Henley with an eighth place time of 12.10.
Peake led the Chanticleers across the finish line in the 200 meter dash placing third in 23.89. Davis placed 12th in the event turning in a time of 24.77.
Vondeeshia Humphries placed fifth overall in the 400 meters as she finished with a 56.71 clip. Melissa Arango also finished the day with a top ten finish after placing sixth in the 100 meter hurdles with a 14.74.
Coastal continued its strong showing in the field events as four Chants placed in the top five of their respective events. Kierra Gabe nearly equaled her school record of 1.75m (5-8.75) in the high jump as she cleared 1.74m (5-8.50) on the day. Anjulia Nicholson, who recorded a hammer throw personal record on Friday, placed fourth in the discus with a distance of 40.64m (133-04). Deborah Mattern placed second in the javelin with a distance of 42.59m (139-09) on her second throw of the day. Caitlin Lupo followed Mattern in the javelin with a third place distance of 39.24m (128-09).
The Chanticleers have now wrapped up their regular season of competition and only those who qualify for the NCAA East first round will continue to compete. The NCAA will announce all first round qualifiers on Thursday, May 19. The NCAA East first round will be contested in Bloomington Indiana from May 26-28.
