Coastal Remains in First After Day Two of Big South Championships

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Coastal Carolina women's track and field team extended its lead on the second day of the Big South Track & Field Championship Meet hosted by VMI.

The Chanticleers, who entered the day in first place, kept on course and at the conclusion of nine events hold a 31.5 point edge over Liberty, 91-59.5. Gardner-Webb trails Liberty by a point in third, while High Point (46 points) and Charleston Southern (44 points) round out the top five.

Kierra Gabe earned All-Big South honors on the day as she placed second in the high jump, which was moved inside due to inclement weather, as she cleared 1.65m (5-05). Kandisa Allicock and Kara Gajoch earned team points for the Chants by placing fifth and sixth in the event. Allicock cleared 1.65m (5-05) as Gajoch jumped 1.60m (5-03).

Jessica Dennison placed sixth in the steeplechase in 11:25.84 to contribute points towards Coastal's total.

In the day's preliminary events, a total of 20 Coastal Carolina athletes advanced to tomorrow's finals, including five individuals in two events each.

In the finals of both the 100 meters and 200 meters half the field will be wearing the black and teal of the Chanticleers as four Coastal competitors advanced in each event. In the 100 meters Erica Peake led the Coastal charge with a time of 12.06 followed by Melika Simpson (12.22), Gabrielle Lee (12.32) and London Smalls (12.33). Qualifying for the 200 meters final is Peake with a time of 24.66. Melika Simpson was close behind in a 25.31 clip followed by Santressa Jamison (25.32) and Ashley Davis (25.60).

Jamison also qualified for the 400 meters final in 56.53. Joining her in the final will be Vondeeshia Humphries and Jerica Howard. Humphries qualified with a time of 56.62 and Howard in a time of 59.49.

Christian Johnson and Janel Reeves, Coastal's two dominant mid-distance runners throughout the season, qualified for the final of both the 800 meters and 1,500 meters. Johnson ran a 2:18.27 in the 800m and was the top finisher in the 1,500m crossing the finish line in 4:47.39. Janel Reeves was right on Johnson's heels in both events as she clocked times of 2:19.99 in the 800m and 4:47.76 in the 1,500m.

Five Chants advanced to the finals in the hurdles after placing in the top eight of the preliminaries. Sierrah Oates and Melissa Arango advanced in the 100 meter hurdles with times of 14.90 and 14.96. In the 400 meter hurdles Estefania Ramirez, Caitlin Baker and Samantha Simile advanced with times of 1:05.51, 1:06.14 and 1:06.23, respectively.

The final day of the Big South Conference Championship continues tomorrow with the women's discus at 10 a.m.
