Chants Collect 26 Top 10 Finishes at Weems Baskin Invitational

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men’s and women’s track & field teams combined to tally 26 top ten finishes in the annual Weems Baskin Relays hosted by the University of South Carolina.

The women’s team claimed 12 top finishes in the meet as Christian Johnson and Mary Lawrence led the way with two first place finishes.  Johnson, a junior, impressed with a top place finish in the 1,500 meter with a time of 4:38.78.  She also finished the 800 meters in 2:19.55 to finish fourth.  Mary Lawrence, who entered the meet ranked fourth in the Big South in the pole vault, cleared a height of 11’7.75” to pick up her first victory in the event on the season.  Additionally, Jessica Dennison was the top collegiate finisher in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a personal record shattering time of 11:37.66.  

The 1,500 meters also saw the Chanticleers claim two additional top ten spots as Janel Reeves (4:50.27) and Shelby Nicosia (4:55.90) finished third and eighth, respectively.

In the 110 meter hurdles, three Chants had impressive showings as Melissa Arango (14.98), Sierrah Oates (15.33) and Kandissa Allicock (15.43) each finished in the top ten in the 44 competitor field.

In the throwing events, Caitlin Lupo tallied a third plce finish in the javlin with a throw of 128'0" (39.03m) as fellow Chant Bridget Garrity placed seventh as she thre for 113'5" (34.56m).  Anjulia Nicholson finished fifth in the discus as she turned in a distance of 129'8" (39.53m).

The ladies from Conway tallied their final three top finishes on the day in the relay events.  The Coastal Carolina ‘A’ team of London Smalls, Erica Peake, Ashley Davis and Santressa Jamison finished fourth in the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 48.58 while the ‘B’ squad of Gabrielle Lee, Jerica Howard, Allicock and Vondeeshia Humphries placed eighth in 49.43.  In the 4x400 meter relay the combination of Thomasena Smith, Caitlin Baker, Smalls and Davis turned in a time of 4:07.16 to place ninth.

The men’s team picked up 11 top ten finishes including Jacques Watson’s first place finish in the high jump.  Watson, who also won the high jump at the Battle of the Beaches, cleared a height of 6’ 8.75” (2.05m).  The Chants also claimed the fifth and eighth place finishes in the event as Burton Jones and Jarry Ntumba cleared heights of 6’ 2.75” (1.90m) and 6’ 0.75” (1.85m), respectively.

In the long jump Raheen Frederick finished ninth with a leap of 22’ 5.75” (6.85m). JaDarrell Barnett turned in a third place finish as his leaps in the triple jump tallied 43’4.5” (13.22m).

In the throws Charlie Tidwell led the way with a 180’7” (45.18m) while Cameron Griggs placed tenth with a toss of 148’2” (45.18m) in the discus.

On the track Christopher Lawson gathered two top 10 finishes as he placed ninth in the 200 meters with a time of 22.13 and tenth in the 100 meters as he crossed the finish line in 10.89.  Tre’von Gee also tallied a tenth place finish in the 110 meter hurdles with season best time of 15.51.  Coastal’s ‘B’ 4x100 meter relay team of Watson, Corey Jameson, Tyler Askew and Ronnie Jackson completed the event in 43.25 to finish tenth.

Kyle Kling started off the Chanticleers superb weekend on Friday evening at the adidas Raleigh Relays with a second place finish in the 10,000 meters.  Kling finished the 25-lap race in a personal best 30:10.71, which now ranks second all-time in the Coastal Carolina University annals.  Kling’s time was second only to NCAA 10,000 meter record holder and defending national champion Sam Chelanga of Liberty.

The Chanticleers will return to action on April 1 at the Tiger Track Classic hosted by Auburn University.
