Women's Track & Field Wraps Up Shamrock Invite With 11 Top 10 Finishes

Nine individuals and two relay teams finished in the top 10 of their respective events.

MYRTLE BEACH - The third and final day of the CCU/Shamrock Invitational at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium saw the Coastal Carolina women's track & field team turn in superb marks as nine individuals and two relay teams finished in the top 10 of their respective events.

Erica Peake led the way in the sprinting events as she placed fourth in the 81-competitor field with a time of 55.05. In the 200m dash newcomer Qwontajah Thompson stopped the clock at 25.24 to place 24th overall.

The 3,000m was highlighted by senior Christian Johnson's third place effort with a time of 10:01.70. Also representing the Chants in the 3,000m were Shelby Nicosia (10:12.33), Sophie Perry (10:22.29) and Seanna Kautz (10:57.84) as they placed seventh, 10th and 16th, respectively.

Jessica Dennison, the lone Chant to compete in a mid-distance event on the day, crossed the 1,500m finish line in 4:54.25.

Coastal was well represented in the 100m hurdles with Christina Davis, Ashley Davis and Camille Hurley earning spots in the finals during the preliminary trials. In the finals C. Davis led the trio with a time of 14.66. A. Davis followed close behind in 11th with a time of 14.83 as Hurley placed 15th in 15.09.

The 200m hurdles saw C. Davis place 25th with a time of 1:06.39 followed by Samantha Simile (1:07.35) and Caitlin Baker (1:07.40).

The Chants' 4x400m relay team of Q. Thompson, Peake, Santressa Jamison and Gabrielle Lee placed fourth with a time of 3:48.14. The 4x100m quartet of A. Davis, Peake, Q. Thompson and Lee clocked a 47.11 to place eighth in the 37-team field.

The long jump and triple jump also featured a Chant with a top five finish. Keegan Woodson placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 5.21m (17-01.25) on her initial attempt. Senior Kierra Gabe finished second in the triple jump with an effort of 12.50m (41-00.25) on her fourth jump. Additionally, Anna Carnegie placed 15th in the long jump with a distance of 4.77m (15-07.75).

Shantelle Patterson, a Pawley's Island native, turned in Coastal's top effort in the shot put with a throw of 13.25m (43-05.75) to place 15th. Naomi Atkins (12.81m (42-02.00)) and Brittany Connor (11.92m (39-01.25)) placed 21st and 37th, respectively, in the 75-member field.

Anjulia Nicholson and Connor each placed in the top five of the discus throw. Nicholson finished third with a toss of 42.62m (139-10) on her third attempt of the afternoon. Connor placed fifth with a 42.45m (139-03) effort.

The freshman trio of Otessa Velasquez, Tiffani Kuhn and Danielle England competed in the javelin placing 18th, 20th and 23rd, respectively, in the strong 57-entrant field. Velasquez led the group with a distance of 34.99m (114-09) followed by Kuhn (34.89m (114-06)) and England (34.24m (112-04)).

The Chants return to action on March 23-24 at the Weems Baskin Invitational hosted by South Carolina in Columbia.
