CLEMSON, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University women's indoor track and field team finished the Tiger Tune-Up with eight top-three finishes, including event winners in Melissa Arango and Kandisa Allicock. The 10-team contest was a warm-up for next weekend's Big South Conference Indoor Championship in Clemson, S.C.
The Chanticleers swept the 60-meter hurdles with Arango in the No. 1 spot with a personal-best time of 8.86, while Shanace Issac and Melekia Simpson made it a 1-2-3 sweep with times of 9.31 and 9.38, respectively. In the high jump, Allicock led the charge, winning the event after clearing 5'5" (1.65m), tying her indoor personal best. Mikaela Terry finished in third with a 5'1" (1.55m) mark, while Kara Gojoch and Kristen Burpoe tied for forth after clearing 4'11" (1.50m).
Simpson and Crystal Robinson had good showings in the 60-meter dash, with Simpson taking third place after a preliminary time of 7.87 and a finals time of 7.93. Robinson was right behind her in fourth, crossing the finish line in 7.99.
In the 200 meters, Robinson was the top Chant in seventh place after crossing the finish line in 27.06. Allicock, Issac and Estefania Ramirez were close behind, placing 10th, 11th and 12th. Mikaela Terry and Jenna Kazmierczak finished the 400 meters with times of 1:03.92 and 1:06.86, respectively.
Christian Johnson was the top mid-distance runner for the Chanticleers, finishing third in the 800 meters with a time of 2.19.76, while Peggy Busbee placed seventh in the event in 2:26.15. In the mile run, Rindi Wood ran a 5:34.86 to finish seventh.
Anjulia Nicholson had a good day at the Tiger Tune-Up, placing third in the weight throw with a 44'2.5" (13.47m) mark and fifth in the shot put after a 35'0.25" (10.67m) throw. In the long jump, Jenna Kazmierczak finished fifth after a leap of 15'7" (4.75m).
The Chanticleers will try to go for their fifth-straight conference championship, as they will compete in the 2010 Big South Conference Championship presented by UCS, Penguin Sport-Wash and Musco Sports Lighting , Feb. 27-28 in Clemson, S.C.
