UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Coastal Carolina University women's indoor track and field team concluded the Sykes and Sabock Challenge Cup, hosted by Penn State with 17 top 10 finishes in the one-day meet on Saturday, Feb. 5. In the team scored meet, the Chanticleers finished eighth out of 12 teams and ahead of Liberty and UNC Wilmington.
Kierra Gabe was the top finisher for the Chanticleers, earning a second place finish in the high jump with a personal best jump of 5'8" (1.73m).
Erica Peake had another good meet, recording two top 10 finishes. In the 60-meter dash, she finished seventh with a time of 7.6819, just ahead of teammate Darriale Henley, who placed eighth at 7.6859. Peake's second top 10 finish came in the 200 meters, crossing the finish line at 24.72, a new personal best.
Christian Johnson also captured two top 10 finishes at the event. Her first came in the mile run, placing eighth with a personal best time of 5:03.09 while the second came in the 800 meters, finishing ninth with a time of 2:16.76, a new season best.
Shantelle Patterson recorded new personal bests in both the shot put and weight throw. In the shot put, she threw 41'3" (12.57m) to finish eighth overall and in the weight throw, she placed eighth with a 54'8.75" (16.68m) toss.
In the 400 meters, Santresa Jamison ran for a personal best time of 56.38 to finish seventh in the field.
In the 5,000 meters, Emily Marchini and Jamie Brusaboth ran for personal bests, finishing back-to-back at seventh and eighth with times of 18:00.81 and 18:01.21, respectively.
Ashley Davis recorded a personal best in the 60-meter hurdles, placing fifth in the finals with a time of 8.81. Estefania Ramirez also ran for a personal best, finishing tied for tenth.
The 4x400-meter relay team, consisting of Vondeeshia Humphries, Jamison, Peake and Samantha Simile, finished fifth overall, crossing the finish line in 3:51.33.
The distance medley team, consisting of Janel Reeves, Ramirez, Jessica Dennison and Shelby Nicosia, placed eighth in the field with a time of 12:39.59.
In the long jump, Sierrah Oates was the top Chant finisher, placing sixth with a leap of 17'9.75" (5.43m) while Thomasena Smith finished tenth with a 16'10.58" (5.14m) mark.
The Chanticleers return to the track next weekend as the squad will split up between the Tiger Paw Invitational and the Tyson Invitational Feb. 11-12.
