BLACKBURG, Va. – The Coastal Carolina University women’s indoor track and field team closed the final day of its season opener at the Virginia Tech Invitational with five top-10 finishes, including one top finish.
Joyce Curtin was the only Chanticleer to win an event by finishing first in the 5,000 meters with a time of 19:10.92. Jessica Dennison was right behind her, placing third in the event with a 20:17.81 finish. Sophomore Darriale Henley finished seventh in the long jump with a mark of 18’11.75” (5.78m) and redshirt freshman Mary Lawrence rounded out the field events, placing ninth in the college division of the pole vault with a 10’6” (3.20m) mark. The 4x400-meter relay team of Santresa Jamison, Melekia Simpson, Ikeiylah Brown and Vondeesha Humphries finished seventh with a time of 3:49.87 and Brown had an impressive 54.8 third leg performance in route to the finish.
In other field event action, Kierra Gabe placed 16th in the high jump with a 5’3” (1.60m) mark. Sierrah Oates had a personal best in the long jump with a 18’6” (5.64m) jump, finishing 12th overall while Thomasena Smith rounded out the long jumpers, finishing 21st. Brittany Connor placed 15th in the shot put by throwing 37’4” (11.38m).
Shelby Donahue was the top Chanticleer to finish in the 3,000 meters with a mark of 10:41.37. Christian Johnson crossed the line at 11:11.69 for 18th and Rindi Wood finished right behind at 19th with a time of 11:22.07.
The Chanticleers are back in action at the Texas Roadhouse Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Jan. 29-30.
