Blacksburg, Va. - The Coastal Carolina women's indoor track and field team had a strong showing in the first day of the season-opening Virginia Tech Invitational on Friday, Jan. 13.
The Chanticleers had six top-20 performances during the first day of events, including three top-10 performances.
Kierra Gabe finished 10th in the triple jump with a mark of 11.80 meters (38-08.75).
Sophie Perry, from Australia, who joined the Coastal track and field team this week, took fourth in the mile following a time of 5:07. Letitia Saayman, a South African who also joined the Chanticleers this week, finished in 14th place with a 5:16.69 and Christian Johnson finished a close 15th with a 5:17.25.
Sharmaine Barnes recorded 41:26 in the 300-meters to take 16th overall.
Mary Lawrence tied for first in the pole vault in the opening round after clearing 3.50 meters (11-05.75) and will look to have another top performance tomorrow in the finals.
The Virginia Tech Invitational continues on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 11 a.m.
