CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University women's tennis team has signed Maria Hesketh (Greenville S.C./J.L. Mann) and Kourtney Kowal (Peachtree City, Ga./Starrs Mill) to National Letters of Intent, Head Coach Jody Davis announced today.
Hesketh has been an All-State and All-Region selection all four years for J.L. Mann, leading the squad to an 18-1 overall record and a Class 3A/4A State Runner-Up finish in 2009. She was the individual runner-up in the state at No. 1 singles and was a part of the No. 1 doubles State Championship duo. She was a USTA South Carolina Clay Court Champion in 2009 and also named the state's Most Improved Junior player. Also solid in the classroom, Hesketh has been on the Honor Roll each of her years at J.L. Mann.
Playing at No. 1 singles since her freshman year, Kowal led her team to a pair of Region titles in 2008 and 2009 after helping the team to a State Championship in 2007. She was undefeated at No. 1 singles in 2009 and named MVP of the squad her sophomore and junior years. She has won three championship titles in the Girls 16's and 18's Doubles in National USTA Tournaments as well. Another quality student-athlete, she is on the Prinicipal's Recognition List as well as being an Honor Student and in the Beta Club.
"We are very excited to have signed two quality individuals like Maria and Kourtney," Davis commented. "Both of these girls understand the academic and athletic tradition we have established here at Coastal. Maria and Kourtney will both have an immediate impact on our program."
