Women's Tennis Finishes Strong at CSU Invitational

The Coastal Carolina University women's tennis team competed in the Charleston Southern University Fall invitational this past weekend in Charleston, S.C.

Senior Marie Matrka (Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington) advanced to the Women’s A Flight finals, winning three matches, including a 6-5, 6-4 semifinal win over teammate Petra Jantti (Haukiverkko Espo, Finland/Tapiolan Lukio). The final, scheduled on Saturday, was rained out. Jantti defeated Tara Hartness of Wofford in a three-set thriller 6-3, 3-6, 7-6. Senior Virginie Dinh (Maisons Albert, France/Sophia) defeated Carol Pancis of Gardner-Webb 6-1, 6-0 in the first round.

In Flight B, sophomore Nicole Lemmerer (Bad Mitterndorf, Austria/Borg Bad Aussee) beat Sydney Pallesen of Winthrop 6-1, 6-1 in the first round before falling to Iva Stojancev of Campbell 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Sophomore Sarize Coetzee (Bloemfontein, South Africa/Texas Tech) advanced to the semifinals after gbeated Adriane Hodges of Wofford 6-4, 6-1.

Junior Rosemary Younger (Atlanta, Ga./Marist) won the Flight C bracket. She beat Ashley Heard of Charleston Southern 6-1, 6-1, Lauren Prickett of Wofford 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 and Carrie Yerkes of Gardner-Webb 6-1, 6-1.

Coastal will next compete at the N.C. State Invitational Oct. 15-17 in Raleigh, N.C.
