Women's Tennis Competes at CofC Invitational

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University women’s tennis team had two players advance to their flight semifinals and four of the six players post at least one win on the opening day of the College of Charleston Invitational, Fri., Sept. 19. This is the season opening event for the Chanticleers after their first scheduled tournament at Brevard was cancelled due to Tropical Storm Hanna.

 

In the top level in Flight A1, sophomore Lexi Bolesky opened her season with a 6-7 (4), 6-2, 7-5 victory over Jessica Cook of East Carolina. However, she dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Caroline Newman of College of Charleston and will now take on Aline Berkenbrock of the North Florida Saturday morning.

 

In Flight A2, the Chanticleers had a pair of entries and each suffered tough losses on the opening day. Tina Petkova lost to Varinia Soler of East Carolina, 6-2, 6-2, and then dropped a 6-2, 6-0 match to Molly McDevitt of Davidson. Kim Webb also lost two, opening with a grueling 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 loss to Alison Rauh of Davidson and then ran out of gas in a 7-5, 7-5 loss to Anna Lee Evans of College of Charleston. Petkova will take on Koren Fleming of Charlotte in her next match, while Webb takes on Nikita Van Lierop.

 

Maria Camberos and newcomer Caitlyn Brooksbank competed in Flight B1. Camberos won her two matches on Friday, defeating Tamara Sachs of East Carolina, 6-4, 6-1, before rallying for a 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Nina Burgoon of College of Charleston.Brooksbank lost her first collegiate match to College of Charleston’s Keely Mulligan before getting her first win over Samantha Galainenen. Camberos will battle Stephani Synn of Davidson in the semifinals, with Brooksbank playing in the losers’ bracket semis against Anne Akhimien of Charleston Southern.

 

Fernanda Shalders played just one match in Flight B2, getting a 6-2, 6-1 straight-set win over Molly Verlin of Davidson. She will take on Charlotte’s Candace Cunningham in the flight semis.

 

The Chanticleers wrap up play at the College of Charleston, Sat, Sept. 20.
