CHARLESTON, S.C. – Coastal Carolina junior Miki Bunea reached the semifinals of the singles A1 flight to highlight competition for the Chanticleers Friday at the College of Charleston Invitational.
Bunea defeated Andrea Rivera of UNC Charlotte in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 before knocking off College of Charleston’s Emma Hayman in the following round 6-4, 7-5 to reach the semifinals. She is scheduled to face Frida Jansaker of Elon Saturday at noon.
Laurel Bolesky downed Stephanie Synn of Davidson in her first match 6-0, 6-1, but fell in her second match 6-4, 6-4 to North Florida’s Aline Berkenbrock in the quarterfinals. Bolesky will face Jordan Johnston in the consolation bracket Saturday at noon.
In the A2 flight, Diana Mortlock dropped her first match to Danielle Day of North Florida, but she answered with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Elise Held of Davidson. Mortlock will take on Rebecca Kirven of Samford Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
Kourtney Kowal competed in the B1 flight and defeated Romina Adum of UNC Charlotte 6-1, 6-2 in her opening match, but fell 6-3, 5-7, 10-6 in her second match against College of Charleston’s Katie Lee. Kowal will next take on Kristin Lewis of Samford Saturday at 3 p.m. in the consolation bracket.
Coastal will resume competition Saturday morning at 8 a.m. when Bolesky and Kowal face Stephanie Synn and Nisha Crouser of Davidson in a doubles match. Bunea and Mortlock will also compete in a doubles match at 8 a.m. when the duo takes on Samford’s Taylor Morgan and Lindsey Mallory.
