Women's Tennis Matrka Named Third Team CoSIDA Academic All-American

CONWAY, S .C. – Junior tennis player Marie Matrka (Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington) has been named to the 2003-04 CoSIDA Academic All-American Women’s At-Large Third Team, the organization announced today (June 17).

Matrka, a biology major carrying a 3.99 grade point average, was selected as the Big South Conference Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year this past season. She was a First Team All-Big South selection, going 15-5 overall and 6-1 in the conference. Matrka also earned a spot on the All-Conference doubles team along with senior Medina Bajrambasic (Zewica, Bosnia). The duo went 16-3 on the season and a perfect 7-0 in the Big South, as well as 3-0 at the first doubles spot in the Big South Tournament, where the Lady Chants played to the finals but fell to Winthrop, 4-1. Matrka has 64 career singles victories, fifth overall in Coastal women’s tennis history.

Matrka is an ITA Scholar-Athlete the last three seasons. She also is Coastal’s first Academic All-American in the 2003-04 season.

Matrka joins Laura Teresby, a women’s golfer from Radford University who was selected to the second team, as the two members from the Big South Conference. She also is one of two athletes on the All-America team from the 2001 class at Wilmington High School, joining Gabby Wedding, a women’s golfer from Kent State University who was on the second team.
