Women’s Tennis Earns Regional Ranking
SKILLMAN, N.J. - The Coastal Carolina women’s tennis team placed ninth in the Carolina Region as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced its final rankings for the 2017-18 season. It is the Chants’ first postseason regional ranking since the conclusion of the 2014-15 season.
North Carolina, Duke and South Carolina hold the top three spots in the region, respectively. Wake Forest (fourth), NC State (fifth) and Clemson (sixth) followed. Winthrop and Furman finished just ahead of Coastal, while Davidson and East Carolina rounded out the regional rankings tied for 10th.
Coastal closed the 2018 spring season with a 16-7 overall record, including a 3-2 mark against Sun Belt opponents. The Chants placed third in the league’s standings, but were knocked out of the Sun Belt Championship by ULM in the quarterfinal round. Iryna Vardanian, Natalie Wall, Sara Bondar, Somer Dalla-Bona and Rylie Cox were voted All-Sun Belt. Vardanian was additionally named the Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year.
The ITA, which is the governing body of collegiate tennis, releases final national and regional rankings at the conclusion of each tennis season. The regional rankings include the top 10 teams, top 20 singles players and top 10 doubles pairs from each of the country’s 12 regions.
