ELON, N.C. Top-seeded Winthrop scored a 4-3 victory over Coastal Carolina to claim the 2002 Big South Conference Women's Tennis Championship on Saturday
Winthrop (18-4) rallied past second-seeded Coastal Carolina to earn the Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Coastal Carolina (17-5), Big South champs last season, captured two of three matches for the doubles point to claim an early 1-0 lead. The Eagles posted singles victories at number three by Jenny Andrade and at number four by Renata Caceres while the Chanticleers received a win from Medina Bajrambasic at number two to bring about a 2-2 deadlock.
A victory at number one by Emma Kidd, four-time Big South Player of the Year, lifted Coastal to a 3-2 advantage. The Eagles rallied with a win by Natasha Lucki at number six to tie the match and a three-set victory by Ana Maria Simanca at number five to give Winthrop its third Big South women's tennis title in four years and sixth overall.
The loss for the Lady Chanticleers brings to a close the brilliant four-year career of Kidd. The Victoria, Australia, native is the only player in Big South tennis history to garner four Player of the Year and eight All-Conference honors. She holds CCU career records for singles victories (114), doubles victories (92), and combined victories (206).
