Women's Tennis Falls To Winthrop, 4-1, In Big South Championship

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The third-seeded Coastal Carolina University women’s tennis team finished as the runner-up at the 2008 Big South Conference Tournament after a tough 4-1 loss to No. 1 seed Winthrop on Saturday, April 19.  

In doubles play, Sara Abutovic and Yelena Fadina defeated junior Tina Petkova (Oakville, Ontario, Canada/St.Ignatius (Toronto)) and sophomore Maria Camberos (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Instituto Lomar del Real), 8-3 in the No. 2 doubles slot while Larisa Bekmetova and Lisa Wilkinson topped senior Sofie Ahlberg (Stockholm, Sweden/Adalsskolan) and sophomore Kim Webb (Usk, Wales/Millfield) in the No. 3 position, 8-3.  No. 1 doubles went unfinished with freshman Lexi Bolesky (Lexington, Ohio/Lexington) and senior Amy Pazahanick (Canton, Ga./Brookwood (Georgia Southern)) competing respectively.  

Singles action brought the lone CCU point with Bolesky defeating Patricia Coimbra 7-6, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.  In the No. 1 spot, Elizaveta Zaytseva topped Pazahanick 6-1, 6-0 while Abutovic earned the victory over Petkova, 7-5, 6-3 in the No. 3 position.  The final point of the match came from Winthrop’s Bekmetova with her 6-3, 6-1 win over Ahlberg. No. 4 and No. 6 singles went unfinished.

The Lady Chanticleers end their season 16-11.
