NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Sun Belt Conference announced Tuesday the seedings for the 2017 Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships, set for April 20-23 in New Orleans, La.
The Chanticleer men’s tennis team was seeded fifth, and will face #4 Troy in Friday’s 3 p.m. first-round match. The Chanticleer women’s team was also seeded fifth, and will also face a fourth-seeded Troy team. The Chanticleer and Trojan women each earned first-round byes, and will square off in Friday’s 8 a.m. quarterfinal match.
All match times for the 2017 Championships are central.
The Coastal men’s squad closed the regular season 13-8 overall, with a 1-2 mark in Sun Belt matches. The Chants’ lone conference victory came in a 6-1 decision over Appalachian State on Feb. 19. The team then finished its conference slate with losses to Georgia State (March 14) and Georgia Southern (April 15). The Chants ended the regular season on a hot streak, with the two conference setbacks being the only losses in their last 10 matches.
The CCU women reached 15 wins for the fourth straight season as the Chants finished 15-6, 1-3. Like the men, the women’s side recorded their lone Sun Belt victory against Appalachian State. The 4-0 blanking of the Mountaineers on March 25 was followed by losses to Troy (March 26), South Alabama (April 8) and Georgia State (April 9).
The Coastal men’s and women’s matches both feed into a likely matchup against the conference’s top seed. Georgia State earned the number one seed on the men’s side, while ULM sits atop the women’s bracket.
