Women's Tennis Winthrop Takes Top Seed at BSC Tennis Championships

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Big South Conference announced today that Winthrop University will be the number one seed for both the 2002 Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships. Both tournaments begin Thursday, April 18 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on the campus of Elon University.

The Championships will run through Saturday, April 20. The first round will be played at two separate sites, the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center at Elon University and the Burlington Tennis Facility. All semifinal matches and both championship matches will be played at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center .

On the men's side, Winthrop will be looking for its first championship since 1997. The Eagles open against eighth-seeded Radford at 10 a.m. on Thursday at Elon University. Fourth-seeded High Point will play fifth-seeded Elon at noon on Thursday at the Burlington Tennis Facility. Second-seeded Charleston Southern faces seventh-seeded Liberty at 1 p.m. at Elon. Third-seeded UNC Asheville will play sixth-seeded Coastal Carolina in the final match of the first round at 3 p.m. at Elon.

The winner of the Winthrop/Radford men’s match will advance to face the winner of the High Point/Elon match in Friday’s first men’s semifinal at 9 a.m. The Charleston Southern/ Liberty winner will face the UNC Asheville/Coastal Carolina winner at noon in Friday’s second men’s semifinal. The men’s title match will be played Saturday at noon.

In the women’s tournament, top-seeded Winthrop will face eighth-seeded Liberty at 9 a.m. on Thursday at Elon University. Fourth seeded Charleston Southern will face fifth-seeded Elon at 9 a.m. at the Burlington Tennis Facility. Second-seeded Coastal Carolina will play seventh-seeded Radford at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Elon University . High Point, the number-three seed, will face sixth-seeded UNC Asheville at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Elon.

The Winthrop/Liberty winner will face the Charleston Southern/Elon winner at 10 a.m. in Friday’s first women’s semifinal. The Coastal Carolina/Radford winner will play the High Point/UNC Asheville winner in Friday’s second women’s semifinal at 1 p.m. The women’s title match will be Saturday at 9 a.m.
