Women's Tennis Defeats UNC Asheville, 4-0, In Big South Championship Quarterfinals

Rock Hill, S.C. – The fourth-seeded Coastal Carolina Chanticleers defeated No. 5 seed UNC Asheville, 4-0 in the first round of the 2009 Big South Women’s Tennis Championship on Thursday, April 16 on the campus of Winthrop University.

In doubles action, Chanticleers Lexi Bolesky and Caitlyn Brooksbank defeated the Bulldog duo of Leslie Smith and Stephanie Schon, 8-1 at the No. 1 flight.  At the No. 3 position, teammates Kim Webb and Maria Camberos secured the doubles point, defeating Tanie Mateva and Nicole Schon, 8-1.  UNC Asheville’s No. 2 pair of Devon Cavanaugh and Louise Bottomley was up one game (6-5) over Tina Petkiova and Patricia Cortes, however the match was unfinished due to tournament rulings.

 In singles action, CCU’s Bolesky triumphed over Smith, 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot, while teammate Webb downed Cavanaugh, 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 3 flight, giving the Chanticleers three points.  Coastal secured the win at No. 4, as Cortes defeated N. Schon 6-0, 6-1, giving the Chants three singles points and the 4-0 victory.  

With the win, Coastal Carolina improves to 15-5 overall and moves on to the semifinals where it will play No. 1 Winthrop at 9:00am on Friday, April 17.  The UNC Asheville Bulldogs end their season 12-9 (3-5 Big South).
