Big South Women's Tennis Tournament Bracket

Charlotte, N.C. - Three Coastal Carolina University women’s tennis players were among those honored by the Big South during the annual awards announcement prior to the conference’s championship tournament. Honami Yazawa was named the 2014 Big South Freshman of the Year and an all-conference singles selection; senior Dominique De Wit received Scholar-Athlete of the Year and all-conference doubles honors; and sophomore Libby Scott was named all-conference in both singles and doubles.

Yazawa finished the regular season of her freshman campaign with an impressive 16-5 overall record in singles, including a 6-3 mark against conference opponents. Yazawa played 11 singles matches at No. 2 where she finished 6-5, while winning all 10 matches she played at No. 3. In doubles, Yazawa compiled a 12-7, 4-5 record playing all but one match at No. 1.

De Wit, a senior with a 4.0 cumulative GPA as a political science major, is earning the first Scholar-Athlete of the Year award of her career. De Wit was previously named to the Big South All-Academic Team, and earns that honor again this season. The Son en Breugel, The Netherlands, native was used primarily in doubles this season where she posted a 15-3 overall record and finished 6-2 against conference opponents. De Wit split time between all three doubles courts, but played primarily at No. 2 where she won all but one of her 12 matches.

Scott, the 2013 Freshman of the Year recipient, was named all-conference for her efforts on both the singles and doubles courts. Scott went 14-6 overall in singles action, and led the Chants with a Big South singles record of 7-2. The sophomore went 10-6 in her primary position at No. 1 singles while also winning all four matches played on the second singles court. Scott was similarly outstanding in doubles, posting a mark of 13-4, 6-3 and splitting time between all three courts.

The fifth-seeded Chanticleers begin their march to the postseason on Tuesday when they face fourth-seeded Campbell in an 11:30 a.m. quarterfinal match in Boiling Springs, N.C.

The Chants lost to the Camels earlier this season in a match played at Campbell. Coastal fell behind early in that match and Campbell held on to take a 4-3 win. The Chanticleers (17-6, 5-4) finished the regular season just one win short of Campbell’s Big South record of 6-3.

The winner of Tuesday’s match will move on to Wednesday’s semifinals, and most likely face the regular-season champion and No. 1 seed Charleston Southern, which plays No. 8 Gardner-Webb in the quarterfinals.

The 2014 Big South Women's Tennis Championship begins Monday, April 14 with two matches, and concludes with the Championship contest on Thursday, April 17 in Boiling Springs, N.C.  The Big South's tournament champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Women's Tennis Championship.
