Women's Tennis Faces Radford in Big South Tournament

The Coastal Carolina women’s tennis team (15-5, 6-1 Big South) travels to Rock Hill, S.C., to compete in the 2005 Big South Women’s Tennis Championships April 14-16. The Lady Chants are the second seed in the tournament and will face seventh-seeded Radford University Thursday, April 14 at 2 p.m.

SCOUTING RADFORD: Radford (5-15, 1-6 Big South) is coming off a 6-1 loss to High Point April 10. Caroline Downs won the Highlanders’ only match, defeating Iris Schabetsberger 7-6, 6-3. In the match versus Coastal, the Highlanders fell 6-0 as Coastal took all six singles matches.

HEAD COACH JODY DAVIS: Jody Davis (Coastal Carolina ’84) enters his ninth season as head coach of the Coastal Carolina women’s tennis program. Davis has an impressive 125-51 record with the women’s squad, including coaching five Big South Conference Players of the Year (including Medina Bajrambasic in 2004), three Big South Rookies of the Year and 24 All-Conference team members, including Bajrambasic and Marie Matrka last season.

MATRKA MOVING UP WINS CHART: Senior Marie Matrka (Wilmington, Ohio) is ranked third in all-time singles wins (90) and fourth in all-time doubles wins (89) at Coastal. The 2004 Third Team Academic All-America selection trails Emma Kidd (114) and Medina Bajrambasic (105) in singles wins.

MATRKA GOES UNBEATEN IN BIG SOUTH: With her 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Jenny Andrade of Winthrop, senior Marie Matrka (Wilmington, Ohio) went a perfect 7-0 in Big South play. She ended the regular season 16-4 in singles and teammed with junior Virginie Dinh (Maisons Albert, France) to go 14-3 in doubles play.

COASTAL RIDES WIN STREAK: Coastal Carolina had a 10-match winning streak from March 5-April 5. That streak included six Big South matches. During that time, the Lady Chants shut out six opponents.
