Charlotte, N.C. - Marie Babayan of the Coastal Carolina women's tennis team has been named the Big South Crons Brand Freshman of the Week for matches played March 31 - April 6, the league announced today. The honor is the second for Babayan this season, and the fifth Big South weekly award for a Chanticleer this season.
Babayan went 3-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles in Coastal's three matches last week. The Bradenton, Fla., native started the week with a No. 5 singles win against Longwood's Mason Thomas in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, before recording Coastal's lone point at #66 Virginia Tech with a No. 4 win over Isel Martinez-Marcos. Babayan's final singles win of the week came against Presbyterian, where she won a No. 5 match against Caroline deLoach in straight sets.
In doubles, Babayan won a pair of No. 3 matches against Longwood and Presbyterian alongside partner Amanda Malatek. The Chanticleer duo downed Longwood's Thomas and Bethany Law 8-3 before besting Presbyterian's deLoach and Kayla Stanford 8-5.
Babayan's three singles wins last week and her No. 5 win against Radford this past Monday bring her overall singles record this season to 15-3, with six of those wins coming against Big South opponents. In doubles, Babayan boasts a 13-4 overall mark, 5-2 in conference, having played all matches with partner Malatek.
Babayan and the Chants close out their regular season schedule with two more matches this week. The Chants travel to first-place Charleston Southern (13-3, 7-0) on Wednesday before a match at third-place #62 Winthrop (12-4, 5-1) on Saturday.
