CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Coastal Carolina junior Miki Bunea has been selected as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Women’s Tennis Co-Player of the Week the conference office announced Wednesday.
Bunea shares the weekly award with Radford senior Ivana Tomiac.
It’s the third straight week that Coastal Carolina has featured the Big South Women’s Tennis Player of the Week. Senior Lexi Bolesky earned the distinction last week, while junior Diana Mortlock was recognized the week prior.
Bunea led Coastal Carolina to a pair of victories last week to help the Chanticleers run their winning streak to five.
She opened the week with a pair of wins to lead the Chanticleers to a 5-2 win over Charlotte. Bunea and Mortlock earned an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles over Emmanuelle Briant and Iveta Guneva before Bunea turned in a win at No. 2 singles to lift the Chants to the victory.
On Sunday against Winthrop, Bunea won both her matches against the Eagles as Coastal Carolina improved to 3-0 inside the Big South and moved into first place atop the conference standings.
Bunea and Mortlock opened the match with an 8-4 victory over Sandra Herrera and Giovanna Portioli at No. 2 doubles to help the Chanticleers sweep all three matches.
With Coastal trailing 2-1, Bunea earned a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 No. 2 singles victory over Elizaveta Zaytseva to tie the match at 2-2. Coastal would go on to win the final two matches en route to a 4-3 victory.
"We continue to be very proud of Miki and her level of play this year," Coastal Carolina head coach Jody Davis said. "She is a fierce competitor and she thrives on big matches."
Bunea and Coastal Carolina return to action Friday at 2 p.m. when the Chanticleers travel to Lynchburg, Va., to take on Liberty from the Liberty University Tennis Courts.
