Women's Tennis Knocks Off West Virginia, 6-1

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University women’s tennis team came out with a big victory over West Virginia, 6-1 on Sat. March 29 at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center. The Lady Chanticleers are now 11-7 on the year, while the Mountaineers have their six match winning streak snapped and fall to 11-5 on the season.

CCU started off strong earning the doubles point.  Sophomore Kim Webb (Usk, Wales/Millfield) and senior Sofie Ahlberg (Stockholm, Sweden/Adalsskolan) defeated Monica Lyskawa and Stephanie LaFortune 8-5 in the No. 2 spot while junior Tina Petkova (Oakville, Ontario, Canada/St.Ignatius (Toronto)) and freshman Fernanda Shalders (Victoria-Es, Brazil/Centro Estadual Educado Jovense Adultos De Vitoria) earned an 8-5 victory over Ashley Pilsbury and Monique Burton in the No. 3 slot.  The No. 1 doubles team of senior Amy Pazahanick (Canton, Ga./Brookwood (Georgia Southern)) and sophomore Maria Camberos (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Instituto Lomar del Real) fell 8-6 to Natalia Prinz and Stacey Percival.

The Lady Chanticleers lost at No. 6 singles but won at Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 to take the victory.  Pazahanick lead the No. 1 singles slot with a 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 win over Percival while Webb defeated Lyskawa 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 2 spot.  At No. 3 singles, Petkova earned a 7-6 (7), 7-5 win over Prinz.  Ahlberg improved upon her record with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Colleen Speaker at the No. 4 position and Camberos beat Pilsbury 4-6, 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot.  In No. 6 singles, West Virginia’s LaFortune defeated Shalders 7-5, 6-3 for the Mountaineers lone point of the match. 

The Lady Chanticleers match against Big South opponent Radford for Sunday March 30 has been postponed due to weather and will be made up at a later date.  Coastal hits the courts again Wed. April 2 at Charleston Southern.  Match time is set for 2:30 p.m.
