CONWAY, S.C.—The Coastal Carolina women’s tennis team defeated the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) 5-2 on Monday, Mar. 19. With the win, the Lady Chanticleers improved their season record to 13-3.
Coastal took the doubles point with Hayley Rudman (Johannesburg, South Africa/Northcliff High School (Mississippi State University)) and Kim Webb (Usk, Wales/Millfield School) defeating Alice Chen and Pascaline Cette of UMBC with a score of 8-4. Sofie Ahlberg (Stockholm,Sweden/Adalsskolan) and Sarize Coetzee (Bloemfontein, South Africa/Oranje Meisieskool (Texas Tech)) also picked up an 8-3 victory over Joy Adewumi and Cornelia Carapcea.
In singles play, Hayley Rudman defeated UMBC’s No. 1 Alice Chen in two sets, 6-0 and 7-5. Kim Webb won in three sets against Cornelia Carapcea, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
Sofie Ahlberg and Maria Camberos (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Instituto Lomar del Real) also improved their season records with wins over UMBC. Ahlberg defeated Adriana Fonseca in two sets with scores of 6-2 and 6-3. Camberos also won in two sets against Barbara Couto going 6-4, 6-3.
CCU will return to action on Tuesday, Mar. 20 to take on Bradley University at 2 p.m. at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center.
