Charlotte, N.C. - Marie Babayan of the Coastal Carolina University women's tennis team has been named the Big South Crons Brand Freshman of the Week for matches played March 10-16, the league announced today. It is the first weekly honor of the freshman's career and the fourth weekly honor for the Chanticleers this season.

Babayan posted a 6-0 record for the Chants last week with victories over Navy, Chicago State and UNC Asheville.

In singles play, she defeated Asheville's Emily McNall 7-5, 6-1 at No. 5 and took a pair of victories over Navy's Gabby Winter (6-4, 6-1) and Chicago State's Hanna Pangestu (6-2, 6-2) on the fourth singles court.

In doubles, the Bradenton, Fla., native paired with senior Amanda Malatek to grab three victories at No. 3. The Chanticleer duo started the week in Orlando, downing Navy's Darien Sears and Sam Droop 8-7 before besting Chicago State's Karyn Emeralda and Pangestu 8-6. The Coastal pair completed the trifecta with an 8-6 win over Gillian Lewis and McNall of UNC Asheville.

Babayan is the third of four Chanticleer freshmen to receive a Big South weekly honor this season. She currently holds an 8-2 overall record in both singles and doubles.

Babayan and the Chanticleers are back in action on Wednesday when they host Hofstra for an 11 a.m. match at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center.
