Women's Tennis Has Four Matches in Five Days This Week

The Coastal Carolina women’s tennis team (6-4, 1-0 Big South) has a busy week, competing in four matches in five days. Coastal hosts Charlotte Tuesday, March 8, at 2 p.m., with weather permitting. The Lady Chants then face Temple Wednesday, March 9 at 2 p.m. CCU then travels to Western North Carolina for the weekend, facing Western Carolina Friday, March 11 at 2 p.m. and UNC Asheville Saturday, March 12 at 11 a.m.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS: Charlotte (4-3) defeated UNC Greensboro 4-3 in its last match March 5. Laura Swain won at number-one singles over Lisa Suggs 6-0, 6-1

Temple (1-3) dropped a 5-2 match to Rutgers in its last match Feb. 19. Ana Maslesa won her match at number-one singles 6-1, 6-1 over Katrina Elder-Bush.

Western Carolina (3-4) defeated St. John’s Fisher 9-0, Bridgewater 7-0 and Mercyhurst 5-2 in Hilton Head, S.C. last week. Tricia Hanson went 3-0 on the week.

UNC Asheville (9-3) defeated Longwood 4-3 in its latest match. Mary Katherine Fitzgerald won her match at number-three singles 6-0, 6-3.

HEAD COACH JODY DAVIS: Jody Davis (Coastal Carolina ’84) enters his ninth season as head coach of the Coastal Carolina women’s tennis program. Davis has an impressive 117-50 record with the women’s squad, including coaching five Big South Conference Players of the Year (including Medina Bajrambasic in 2004), three Big South Rookies of the Year and 24 All-Conference team members, including Bajrambasic and Marie Matrka last season.

MATRKA MOVING UP WINS CHART: Senior Marie Matrka (Wilmington, Ohio) starts her senior season ranked third in all-time singles wins (82) and fourth in all-time doubles wins (82) at Coastal. The 2004 Third Team Academic All-America selection trails Emma Kidd (114) and Medina Bajrambasic (105) in singles wins.

CHANTS IMPRESSIVE IN BSC OPENER: Coastal Carolina won all nine matches in its Big South opener against Birmingham-Southern March 5. All six singles matches were won in straight sets against the team that was picked to finish fourth in the league. Senior Virginie Dinh (Maisons Albert, France) moved to 7-2 on the year with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Rachel Malina.
