Women's Tennis' Hill Named Big South Freshman of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Winthrop’s Elizaveta Zaytseva has been named the Big South Choice Hotels Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, while Coastal Carolina’s Mary Hill has been named The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week for matches played Feb. 22-28, it was announced today by the Conference office.

Zaytseva, a junior from Ryazan, Russia, won both her No. 1 singles and doubles matches last week against No. 27 ranked Virginia Commonwealth. She began her day partnered with teammate Yasmine Alkema and provided the only doubles point for the squad as they defeated VCU’s Ana Bara and Josefin Hjertquist, 8-3. In singles play, she knocked off Bara by a score of 6-4, 6-7, 10-8.

Hill, a freshman from Munster, Ind., posted wins in both her singles and doubles matches as the Chanticleers defeated UNC Asheville, 7-0 last Sunday. Hill and senior Paty Cortes took the No. 2 doubles match over Louise Bottomley and Devon Cavanaugh, 8-3. Later in singles action at the No. 6 spot, she defeated Asheville’s Tania Mateva in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
