HUNTSVILLE, ALA.- The Coastal Carolina women's tennis team swept Alabama A&M on Friday morning in Huntsville, 7-0. The win helped the Lady Chanticleers improve to 7-1 on the 2007 season.
The Lady Chanticleers won all five singles matches and won the doubles point despite losing number two doubles in the match. Senior Hayley Rudman (Johannesburg, South Africa/Northcliff High School (Mississippi State University)) picked up her seventh win to remain perfect so far in 2007 after defeating Charlene Tsangamwe 6-1, 6-1. Junior Amy Pazahanick (Canton, Georgia/Brookwood High School (Georgia Southern University)) beat Shaniek Pinder 6-1, 6-3 and Sarize Coetzee (Bloemfontein, South Africa/Oranje Meisieskool (Texas Tech)) downed Me'Shala Johnson 6-0, 6-0 in number three singles. Coastal's number three and four singles both went into three sets, Maria Camberos (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Instituto Lomar del Real) defeated Monique Jones in a three set rally, 6-4, 5-7, 10-7 and Kimberely Webb (Millfield School) beat Batsirai Bvunzawabaya 6-1, 2-6, 10-2. Sofie Ahlberg (Stockholm,Sweden/Adalsskolan) also picked up a win for the Lady Chants after beating Djuana Grant 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles action, Rudman and Pazahanick defeated Bvunzawabaya and Tsangamwe 8-0 at the number one doubles position while Camberos and Webb were defeated by Pinder and Jones, 9-8. Winning the point for the Lady Chanticleers was the doubles team of Coetzee and Ahlberg who picked up the win against Brittany Jelks and Johnson, 8-3.
Both the women's and men's tennis team open Big South Conference play on Saturday against Birmingham-Southern. The Lady Chanticleers play at 10 a.m. while the CCU men start at Noon.
