Women's Tennis Loses Big South Opener to Liberty

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The Coastal Carolina University women’s tennis team fell to Liberty 4-3 at Myrtle Beach High School Sunday, Feb. 24. 

In doubles play, sophomore Maria Camberos (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Instituto Lomar del Real) and junior Tina Petkova (Oakville, Ontario, Canada/St. Ignatius of Loyola (Toronto)) earned the lone doubles victory for the Lady Chanticleers with an 8-2 win over Hannah Fick and Stephanie Brown in the No. 2 slot. The duo of senior Amy Pazahanick (Canton, Ga./Brookwood (Georgia Southern)) and Lexi Bolesky (Lexington, Ohio/Lexington) suffered their first loss of the season as Jordan Jenkins and Ekaterina Kuznetsova won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles. In No. 3 doubles, Martyna Hanusz and Fabiana Gouveia defeated senior Sofie Ahlberg (Stockholm, Sweden/Adalsskolan) and sophomore Kim Webb (Usk, Wales/Millfield) 8-4.

The Lady Chants split the singles competition with the Lady Flames, earning victories in the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 singles spots.  Pazahanick defeated Hanusz at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-3, while Ahlberg extended her winning streak to seven as she earned the victory over Fick in the No. 4 singles slot 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Camberos took the final CCU win with a 6-7, 6-2, 10-6 victory over Gouveia at the No. 6 spot. Meanwhile, Jenkins defeated Bolesky 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and Kuznetsova had a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 win over Webb in the No. 3 slot. Brown defeated freshman Fernanda Shalders (Vitoria-Es, Brazil/Centro Estadual Educado Jovense Adultos De Vitoria) 6-0, 6-0 in No. 5 singles.

Coastal returns to the courts when it travels to UNC Asheville to take on the Lady Bulldogs Sunday, March 9 at noon.
