The Coastal Carolina womens tennis team (3-0) plays four matches, all on the road, this week as the Lady Chanticleers will have a weekend in North Carolina. Coastal faces East Carolina Friday, Feb. 25, at 1:30 p.m. Coastal then plays Mount Olive and Gardner-Webb in Mount Olive Saturday, Feb. 26, at 11 a.m., and 2 p.m., respectively. Coastal wraps up the week at North Carolina State Feb 27 at noon.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS: East Carolina (9-3) fell to Davidson 6-1 in its last match. ECU won the doubles point, but fell in all six singles matches. East Carolina had won seven straight prior to the Davidson loss.
Mount Olive (3-2) lost 7-2 to Erskine in its last match. The Trojans have wins over Francis Marion, Anderson and Fayetteville State this season.
Gardner-Webb (0-6) fell to Wofford 6-1 in its last contest. Molly Hoeffner won her singles match 6-2, 0-6, 6-3. This match is a make-up from the Jan. 29 match that was rained out.
North Carolina State (4-1) is ranked 70th in the latest ITA rankings. Barbara Orlay is undefeated in singles matches this season. North Carolina State faces Winthrop before hosting Coastal.
HEAD COACH JODY DAVIS: Jody Davis (Coastal Carolina 84) enters his ninth season as head coach of the Coastal Carolina womens tennis program. Davis has an impressive 114-46 record with the womens squad, including coaching five Big South Conference Players of the Year (including Medina Bajrambasic in 2004), three Big South Rookies of the Year and 24 All-Conference team members, including Bajrambasic and Marie Matrka last season.
MATRKA MOVING UP WINS CHART: Senior Marie Matrka (Wilmington, Ohio) starts her senior season ranked third in all-time singles wins (77) and fourth in all-time doubles wins (78) at Coastal. The 2004 Third Team Academic All-America selection trails Emma Kidd (114) and Medina Bajrambasic (105) in singles wins.
RAIN FORCES CANCELLATION: The Coastal-College of Charleston match scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 20, was postponed due to rain. The match will be made up Wednesday, March 2, at 1 p.m.
UP NEXT: Coastal will host the College of Charleston Wednesday, March 2, at 1 p.m., before travelling to Birmingham, Ala., to face UAB March 4 at 2 p.m., and Birmingham-Southern March 5 at 11 a.m.
