BOONE, N.C. -- The Coastal Carolina womens tennis team took on Appalachian State on Friday, Feb. 17 defeating the Lady Moutaineers with a score of 5-2. Coastal then took on Western Carolina in Cullowhee, N.C. defeating WCU 6-0.
In the first match against Appalachian State, senior Hayley Rudman (Johannesburg, South Africa/Northcliff High School (Mississippi State University)) defeated Anja Gugger with scores of 6-0, 4-6, 7-5 while Sarize Coetzee (Bloemfontein, South Africa/Oranje Meisieskool (Texas Tech)) picked up a win against Monica Tomas going 7-6, 4-6, 6-4. Also getting victories was Kimberely Webb who defeated Lauren Holton 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 and Tina Petkova who beat Caroline Mauch 8-3. Amy Pazahanick (Canton, Georgia/Brookwood High School (Georgia Southern University)) fell to Amanda Cash 7-6, 6-3 while freshman Maria Camberos (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Instituto Lomar del Real) was defeated by Frances Blanton with a score of 8-7.
In doubles action, the Lady Chanticleers won on all three courts with Rudman and Pazahanick defeating the Gugger/Tomas duo 8-2. Also getting victories was the Webb/Coetzee pair beating Blanton and Holton 8-4 as well as Petkova and Camberos coming out on top with a score of 8-2 against Cook and Cash.
With Coastals win 6-0 win over Western Carolina they remain undefeated and improve to 6-0 on the season. Battling cold weather conditions and due to impending snow they were only able to play singles matches.
The Lady Chants swept all six matches 2-0 except one. Rudman defeated Trish Hanson 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 1 spot while Coetzee took down Tessie Salame 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 2 match. In No. 3 Webb took home the win over Mariona Trilla Jane 6-2, 6-0. Pazahanick beat Susanna Sjokvist in three sets 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 in the No. 4 spot and in the No. 5 WCUs Amanda Massey fell to Tina Petkova 6-3, 6-3. Finally, in the No. 6 spot Camberos overcame Holly Stock 6-1, 6-0.
The Lady Chants return to action next weekend, heading to Greenville, N.C. on Friday, Feb. 23 to take on East Carolina and then return home on Sunday, Feb. 25 to take on the College of Charleston at 1 p.m.
