Women's Tennis Picked Second in the Big South Preseason Poll

The Coastal Carolina University women’s tennis team was picked to finish second in the Big South Conference’s annual women’s tennis preseason poll, announced Feb. 9 by the league office.

Winthrop was picked to win its sixth title in the last seven years, collecting 14 first-place votes and 126 points overall. Coastal earned two first-place votes and 109 total points to earn the runner-up spot. The two teams were followed by High Point (91 points), Birmingham-Southern (72 points), UNC Asheville (58 points), Liberty (57 points), Charleston Southern (39 points) and Radford (26 points).

Coastal returns five letterwinners to the 2005 squad, including senior Marie Matrka (Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington), who was a First Team all-Big South honoree in 2004.

Coastal (1-0) hosts North Carolina A&T Sunday, Feb. 13, at 1 p.m., at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center.
