The Coastal Carolina womens tennis team (1-0) has two matches this week after opening the season on the right foot. The Lady Chanticleers travel to Buies Creek, N.C., to face Campbell University Wednesday, Feb. 9, at 1:30 p.m. Coastal then hosts North Carolina A&T Sunday, Feb. 13, at 1 p.m. Coastal is coming off a 6-1 win over Presbyterian this past Sunday.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS: Campbell (1-2) defeated Virginia Commenwealth and fell to George Mason and West Virginia at the VCU Indoor Invitational this past weekend. Georgiana Marta won 2-of-3 matches, including a 6-2, 6-2 win over Drexel.
North Carolina A&T (0-0) will open its season with Coastal. Last year, the Lady Chants defeated the Aggies 7-0 in Conway.
HEAD COACH JODY DAVIS: Jody Davis (Coastal Carolina 84) enters his ninth season as head coach of the Coastal Carolina womens tennis program. Davis has an impressive 112-46 record with the womens squad, including coaching five Big South Conference Players of the Year (including Medina Bajrambasic in 2004), three Big South Rookies of the Year and 24 All-Conference team members, including Bajrambasic and Marie Matrka last season.
MATRKA MOVING UP WINS CHART: Senior Marie Matrka (Wilmington, Ohio) starts her senior season ranked third in all-time singles wins (75) and fourth in all-time doubles wins (76) at Coastal. The 2004 Third Team Academic All-America selection trails Emma Kidd (114) and Medina Bajrambasic (105) in singles wins.
COASTAL OPENS 2005 WITH WIN: Coastal won eight of nine matches, including all three in doubles in a 6-1 win over Presbyterian Feb. 6. Senior Marie Matrka (Wilmington, Ohio) won 6-1, 6-3 in singles, while sophomore Nicole Lemmerer (Bad Mitterndorf, Austria) and freshman Sofie Ahlberg (Stockholm, Sweden) also won in straight sets.
