WOMEN’S TENNIS WRAPS UP HOMESTAND WITH FOUR MATCHES THIS WEEK: The Coastal Carolina women’s tennis team has a busy week ahead with four scheduled matches. The Lady Chanticleers open the week, Tuesday, Feb. 5, hosting Queens University at the Prestwick Country Club at 1 p.m. Coastal will face Winston-Salem State and Campbell, Saturday, Feb. 9 at Myrtle Beach High School, before returning to the Billy Nichols Tennis Center, Sunday, Feb. 10 to host Wofford at 12 p.m.
COASTAL TOPS MOUNTAINEERS: CCU downed Appalachian State, 6-1, in Lady Chants’ home opener at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center. Coastal swept all three doubles matches and were victorious in five of the six singles match ups.
SCOUTING THIS WEEK’S OPPONENTS: Queens University opens its season Tuesday against Coastal. Winston-Salem State dropped its season opener, 7-0, to Elon and will face both North Carolina A&T and Charlotte this week, before squaring off with CCU. Campbell sports a 2-0 record with wins over George Mason and James Madison. The Camels will host Charleston Southern before Saturday’s contest. Wofford is currently unbeaten on the season, sporting a 3-0 record with victories over Gardner-Webb, North Carolina A&T and Mercer. The Terriers will host USC Upstate before facing CCU.
We’re number one: The team of freshman Lexi Bolesky and senior Amy Pazahanick remained perfect on the season at No. 1 doubles with an 8-1 victory over Monica Thomas and Lindsay King from Appalachian State. Coastal’s duo now sits at 2-0.
COASTAL Drops Season Opener, 7-0: CCU dropped its 2008 spring season opener, 7-0, against the College of Charleston, Jan. 27, at Patriots Point. The match served as the season opener for both squads. The Lady Chanticleers picked up its lone victory in No. 1 doubles as freshman Lexi Bolesky and senior Amy Pazahanick earned an 8-6 victory.
COASTAL SELECTED SECOND IN PRESEASON POLL: CCU was selected to finish second in the annual Big South Conference preseason poll, as voted on by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors. The defending league champion Lady Chanticleers received 78 points and four first-place votes in the poll. Winthrop was tabbed as the preseason favorite with 93 points, receiving nine first-place votes.
DEFENDING THE BIG SOUTH TITLE: Coastal knocked off the defending five-time Big South Tournament Champion Winthrop in a thrilling 4-3 decision to capture the second conference championship in CCU history. With the victory, the Lady Chants qualified for the NCAA Tournament where they fell to Clemson, 4-0, in the opening round.
20/20 VISION: With its 20-6 overall record, CCU reached the 20-win plateau for the second consecutive season. Coastal posted a 22-4 record in the spring of 2006. Since the turn of the century, the Lady Chants have posted an amazing 143-38 (.790) record.
HEAD COACH JODY DAVIS: Head Coach Jody Davis enters his 12th season as the CCU mentor. While at the helm, Davis has led Coastal to a 171-62 (.733) overall record and a 77-24 (.762) mark in the Big South Conference. A four-time Big South Coach of the Year honoree, Davis has guided CCU to two league championships.
