Cullowhee, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina women's tennis match against Western Carolina was canceled due to snow after the Chants took an early 1-0 lead in the match.
The Chanticleers and Catamounts were just finishing the first sets in singles competition when the snow began. The teams continued to play into the second sets before the weather conditions proved too bad to continue play. The match had already been postponed to a 2 p.m. start because of the conditions.
Coastal received the doubles point early in the match by recording victories in two of the three doubles spots. Kourtney Kowal and Mikaela Davies, playing in the first doubles position, defeated Western Carolina's pair of Nicole Nielly and Shannon Bettiol, 8-2. Coastal also saw a victory in the third position where Libby Scott and Dominique De Wit handed an 8-2 loss to Sara Ruiz Pajares and Erin Maguire. Western Carolina's Stacia Kissell/Karen Jimenez defeated Shelby Bates and Vanessa Ortiz in the second spot, 7-2.
Before play was cancelled, Western Carolina was leading in four of the six singles matches. WCU's Kissell, Jimenez, Bettiol and Maguire had taken the first sets in the one, two, five and six spots, respectively, while CCU's Libby Scott led in third position and Kourtney Kowal won the first set in the fourth position 6-3.
"At the end of the girls' first sets the snow began to start," coach Hewitt said. "They continued to fight it out regardless of the conditions with positive and competitive attitudes. It's unfortunate that the match was snowed out because it was shaping up to be quite a battle. We hope to carry today's intensity into next week's match."
The Chants will next see action in their home-opener on Feb. 9 at 1 p.m. when they will play host to Savannah State.
