ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina women's tennis team earned a berth in the 2012 Big South Championship following a 4-1 win over second-seeded Charleston Southern Friday afternoon at the Asheville Racquet Club South.
"Today's match was a battle from beginning to end," said head coach Catherine Hewitt.
"The doubles point could not have been closer," added Hewitt. "Miki and Diana fought off numerous match points to survive and ultimately clinch the doubles point. They showed great senior poise."
Charleston Southern evened the match at one apiece after Olga Makhova won 6-3, 6-1 from the first flight. Coastal took a 3-1 lead with wins from Mikaela Kristofersson (6-4, 6-3) and Amanda Malatek (6-3, 6-4). All-conference selection Katie Fosnacht clinched the match with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 triumph over Yvonne Hubler.
"We played great singles today and got off to an early lead in most sets," said Hewitt. "Our confidence and competitive drive pulled us through. Katie, our freshman, clinched the match for us. That kid ran down every ball thrown at her today. It goes without saying that I am very proud of all the girls!"
Coastal plays the top-seeded Winthrop Eagles in the Big South Championship match on Saturday, April 21. First serve is slated for 9 a.m. at the Asheville Racquet Club South with the winner earning a bid to the NCAA Championship. Coastal fell 6-1 earlier this season at Winthrop. The Chants won the doubles match but were swept on the singles side.
"We will be ready for a battle and a great opportunity for Coastal women's tennis," added Hewitt. "We feel great and look forward to Saturday's Championship match."
