CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women’s tennis team closed the regular season with a 5-2 victory over Charleston Southern Friday afternoon from the Billy Nichols Tennis Center to claim a share of the Big South regular season championship.
It’s the second regular season Big South championship in school history and first since the 2001 season.
The Chanticleers finished the season with a 19-5 overall record and a 6-1 mark inside the Big South and will be the No. 2 seed next week at the Big South Championships. Coastal Carolina will face No. 7 seed UNC Asheville Thursday at 3 p.m. from Rock Hill, S.C.
Coastal Carolina grabbed an early 1-0 lead by taking two of three doubles matches to earn the point. Senior Lexi Bolesky and freshman Mikaela Kristofersson earned an 8-2 win over Angie Torres and Brooke Pletcher at the No. 1 position. The Buccaneers answered when Marija Dzakovic and Alexandra Walters defeated Kourtney Kowal and Caitlyn Brooksbank 8-3 at No. 3.
The Chants responded by clinching the point following an 8-2 win by juniors Miki Bunea and Diana Mortlock over Heather Isbell and Alia Nour at No. 2.
Bunea put the Chants ahead 2-0 when she turned in a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles over Pletcher before freshman Maria Hesketh upped the lead to 3-0 following her 6-2, 6-3 victory over Susita Das at No. 6.
Kristofersson clinched the win for Coastal with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Walters at No. 4. Kowal closed the match when she bested Nour 5-7, 6-3, 10-7 at No. 3.
“Charleston Southern is a tough team and fought very hard today,” Coastal Carolina head coach Jody Davis said. “Our team was under the gun to share a conference title. Our focus now shifts to the conference tournament next week. We know that anything can happen and hopefully we will prepare to play well. I am very proud of this team and what they accomplished in the regular season.”
