Asheville, N.C. - Despite winning the doubles point, Coastal Carolina could not hold on as UNC Asheville took five singles points to claim a 5-2 win over the Chanticleers (9-8, 4-2).
The Chants started the match strong, winning two of three doubles matches to take the opening point.
Coastal’s No. 2 pair of Libby Scott and Dominique De Wit started things off with a 8-4 win over Christine Boissevain and Emily McNall. Mikaela Davies and Alicia Robinson followed up with a 8-2 win at No. 3 over Amryn Soldier and Gillian Lewis at No. 3 to finish the point for Coastal. Zoe Hamel and Ericka Rivero finished off doubles competition with an 8-6 win at No. 1 over Kourtney Kowal and Shelby Bates.
The Chants continued to perform well in singles, taking the first point before the Bulldogs rallied back.
Bates won the opening singles point at No. 2 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over McNall, the only singles point Coastal would receive.
UNCA responded by taking the next five singles contests. The Bulldogs received points from Lewis, Boissevain, Rivero, Soldier and Hamel to propel them to a 5-2 win.
“Asheville fought hard today and we simply didn’t match their intensity,” said head coach Catherine Hewitt. “We are going to put this match behind us and get ready for our match at Presbyterian tomorrow.”
Coastal’s match at Presbyterian on Sunday will begin at 1 p.m.
