CONWAY, S.C. –  The Coastal Carolina women’s tennis team won its fifth straight match and moved into first place atop the Big South standings following a 4-3 win over Winthrop Sunday afternoon from the Billy Nichols Tennis Center.

The Chanticleers moved to 3-0 inside the Big South Conference and are the only team undefeated in league play.

Coastal Carolina grabbed an early 1-0 lead on the Eagle after sweeping all three doubles matches.  Juniors Miki Bunea and Diana Mortlock opened the match and earned an 8-4 win over Sandra Herrera and Giovanna Portioli at the No. 2 position.  Senior Lexi Bolesky and freshman Mikaela Kristofersson clinched the point for Coastal after downing Yasmine Alkema and Lisa Wilkinson 8-6 at No. 1.

Senior Caitlyn Brooksbank and freshman Kourtney Kowal completed the sweep following their 8-7 win over Andressa Garcia and Elizaveta Zaytseva at No. 3.

“This was a great win for our tennis team today,” Coastal Carolina head coach Jody Davis said.  “Winthrop is a very good team and this is by far our best win of the season. This was a true team effort, and I am very proud of our team for showing tremendous heart today in a tightly contested match.”

Coastal Carolina returns to action Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. when the Chanticleers host Charleston Southern from the Billy Nichols Tennis Center.
