Hilton Head, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina women's tennis team split its two neutral site games Thursday in Hilton Head, winning the first match 9-0 over Division II opponent University of Charleston (W.V), and dropping the second 5-2 to Pittsburgh. The Chanticleers now sit at 7-5 after Thursday's 1-1 outing.
The Chants started the day by making a clean sweep of Charleston in both singles and doubles.
Playing by Division II rules, Coastal grabbed three early points in doubles after garnering wins from the No. 1 pair of Kourtney Kowal and Shelby Bates, the No 2 pair of Libby Scott and Dominique De Wit and the No. 3 pair of Mikaela Davies and Vanessa Ortiz.
The Chants continued to be dominant in singles, as Scott, Davies, Bates, Kowal, Alicia Robinson and De Wit all won their respective matches in straight sets.
Coastal then had a brief afternoon rest before returning to the court to square off against Pitt.
Returning to Division I rules, the Panthers struck first, winning two of three doubles matches to take the first point of the evening.
Amanda Wickman and Molly Wickman of Pitt started things off, grabbing a No. 2 doubles win over Davies and Robinson of the Chants. The Panthers followed up with a No. 3 victory as De Wit and Scott were not able to fend off Kimmy Borza and Karma Parbhu. Coastal managed to secure a win at No. 1 doubles where Kowal and Bates won a tough tiebreaker 8-7 (4), but Pitt had already secured the point.
Pitt continued to add to its lead as play turned to singles, with No. 3 Borza taking the first match over Bates, 6-2, 6-2.
Continuing her excellent singles play this season, Libby Scott cut the Panthers' lead in half after downing Taylor Washington in a tough three-set battle, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.
Coastal would not be able to hold on though, as Pitt came back to win the No. 2, 4 and 6 positions to seal the match.
The Chants received their second point in the No. 5 singles match, with Alicia Robinson downing Molly Wickman 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.
The Chants will have a few days rest as they return home and prepare for a non-conference match against Cornell, March 18 at 1 p.m.
